A review of The Monuments Men (2014)

A recent movie coming out soon is Monuments Men. The trailer itself seems to automatically provokes an emotional response. The trailer begins by giving enough information to lure the audience in. The Monuments Men is about a group of soldiers that go out to protect and recover stolen artwork from the Nazis. It’s based on a true story and is a World War II movie.

The few beginning scenes involve a lot of dramatic images. They show images of famous artwork and then flamethrowers burning different artworks.

The firsts words of the trailer stress the importance of artwork and how it is the foundation of modern society. The last words of the trailer are all hell is breaking lose here…. We have some unfinished business. On its face the trailer starts strong and ends strong purely off the dialog they use.

The music used in the trailer is an important tool that brings the story together. The music is instrumental and starts off and ends strong. It rises then dips down and rises back up again.

Some scenes they repeat or are similar is images of art burning and explosions, which goes towards the trend of sensationalism most movies currently follow.

The most powerful scenes within this movie would have to be the scenes about the art burning coupled with the words, ‘we are protecting a culture.’ These days not too many people care about art as much, everything has become online and its about technology. This movie seems to send the message that art is important and a necessity of culture, so much so that a military operation was held to protect it.
